Responsible for ensuring the safety of swimming pool patrons by preventing and responding to emergencies utilizing appropriate surveillance and rescue techniques during lap swim, open swim, swim lessons, water aerobics class, and other multi-usage swim times.

• Minimum of fifteen (15) years of age.
• Possess and maintain Lifeguard, First Aid and CPR/AED certifications.
• Demonstrate vision capabilities of 20/30 or better and wear any corrective eye wear to maintain this 20/30 or better vision while lifeguarding.

• Enforce all aquatic facility policies, rules and regulations and caution swimmers regarding unsafe activities.
• Recognize and respond effectively in all types of emergencies, by performing life-saving techniques including in-pool rescues, CPR/AED, and first aid administration.
• Prepare the pool for various activities by removing or adding lap lanes, putting necessary equipment on deck, etc.
• Provide a high quality of customer service in a professional manner.
• Follow all Byron Park District policies, procedures and guidelines.
• Maintain good safety awareness and follow all safety guidelines and procedures.
• Complete cleaning duties, such as picking-up and rinsing the pool deck.
• Wear appropriate Byron Park District attire.
• Complete records and reports.
• Attend in-service trainings and staff meetings.
• Complete additional duties as assigned by supervisor.

This position must be able to be exposed to chlorinated water for short periods of time. This position must be able to frequently lift participants weighing up to 50 lbs. and over with assistance. This position will be required to stand and sit for extended periods of time and occasionally stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, bend, twist, climb, and reach. This position should have the physical ability to perform CPR and be physically fit and have the endurance to help participants. This position must also have 20/30 vision or corrected vision must wear glasses or contacts while on duty.

This position must be able to be exposed to pool chemicals and indoor swimming pool conditions, including high humidity and varying degrees of temperature and light. The noise level of the environment is moderate to loud.

This position must also be able to work in a stressful environment due to the responsibility for the safety of patrons and handling emergency situations while remaining calm. This position must be able to follow and give directions. This position must be a quick thinker, have the ability to react quickly, be flexible and have good verbal and non-verbal communication skills.
